Artist’s Statement
I have illustrated for over thirty five years, beginning in New York City thanks to good graces of Frank & Jeff
Lavaty, my agents, who gave me my start, introducing me to artists and ideas that remain to inspire my
artwork. From them, I began illustrating books, movie posters, advertising, newspaper and magazine editorial
features. When I had a chance to move to Florida to teach at the Ringling School of Art and Design, I was
honored to be chosen the first chair of the illustration department. From the powerful influences of fellow
instructors, I learned to be a demonstration teacher and after sixteen years at Ringling, moved on to the
outskirts of Denver, to assume my current position as chair the illustration department at the Rocky Mountain
College of Art and Design, in Lakewood, Colorado.
My most recent artwork continues to explore editorial illustration, children's books, murals and fine arts. I
work in a variety of traditional mediums, as well as electronic media. I consider my illustrations hybrids, using
elements of traditional materials combined with the computer.
Like all teachers, I have learned from my students. Their questions, comments and advice continue to push
me beyond my comfort zone and enliven my work immeasurably. Naturally, anything that I do in publishing
serves to validate my ideas in the classroom. The two have worked hand in hand, to stimulate and restore my
fascination with illustration.
